Hand Carved and Painted Mask from Mexico. I purchased this mask from a man on the sidewalk of a small village in Mexico while on vacation quite a few years back, I would say in the mid-nineties. There are villagers in this town that solicit their hand made items to the tourists that go to Puerto Pen`asco, Mexico year round. Typically you will find knock-off sunglasses and name brand purses offered for sale. The vendors will often be very persuasive, insisting that, "It's almost free, but the bag that it will come in will cost you $200 pesos". They can have a sense of humor. On occasion, as I travel to Mexico frequently, you will run into an individual creating handmade jewelry for purchase, or weaving baskets for sale. So when I saw the man painting one of his masks, and there were a few completed ones layed out for viewing, and beside him chunks of wood that he was carving these beautiful masks out of, I had to buy one. Well, I ended up buying three actually. The other one will also be available for purchase here on ebay. This mask measures about 10" and about 6" across. Thank you for looking! |
